TAUTENHAIN
GERMANY
15-16 may 1999
This
competition is a real pleasure to drive to. It is not
that far away (550 km.) and the Thursday before is
Ascension day. We always take the Friday off and this
gives us the idea off a short holiday. By the way, we
drove already on Wednesday (after work) and are normally
the first arriving. Not this time, the Berneckers did
beat us this time as he would do later over me in the
competition. Those mechanics don't show any respect.
First Bitterfeld, now Tautenhain. I must be happy that he
is mechanic for me on the European Championships.
The
Thursday is a lazy day, good for helping taking the cut
grass away. For those who can't stand barbaric
circumstances and want to learn something about it: this
is the place to go to!!
One toilet, such a nice wooden cabin where it is nearly
impossible to move yourself a micron and a water tank for
fresh water. The surroundings are nice and it is a
pleasure just to sit, drink something and prepare a
little for the next day.
Friday is
the practicing day. Those who arrive build up their tents
(The British were staying in a hotel, soft guys) and go
out practicing. Johann Schwarz who is also machining his
own crankcases showed that he made a great improvement.
23.5 seconds for 10 laps is OKEE. There seems to be a
growing interest to make own engines among pilots and I
am happy about that. The know how about combat engines is
mainly in Russia and their lips are to often sealed. It
is possible to do measurements in different types of
engines but still you don't hear all about alloys and
other interesting things.
The
competition itself: 31
competitors from 9 countries.
The weather on Saturday was macabre, a stormy
wind and rather cool. This had a big influence on
the bouts and happily the Sunday showed some
better weather.A thing I have to
mention. It is on European and World
Championships common practice to land the model
before the end of the bout so that the opponent
can't make a cut and the landing one still wins.
This is a tactic that can't be forbidden because
the rules doesn't say anything about it but still
I don't like it. Especially not on normal
international competitions, or does the status of
World Cup Competition makes the competition too
official?? My meaning is that it shouldn't happen
but it seems to be necessary for some of us. I
must honestly say that I enjoy it when somebody
lands and loses. AKN Mischa demanded Valerie
Akbachev to land which he did but Mischa didn't
see all the cuts. The opponent won and Valerie
was sad. I know that Valerie is not the person to
do these kind of things. He prefers to fly in
Western Europe instead of Russia because these
actions takes the soul out of combat. I think he
will follow his own instinct next time. In my
point of view he is a sportive pilot and doesn't
need it.

The oldest hooligan around
on the combat field.

Heinz
Durner was for me the unexpected devil that came out of
his cave. Showing up with only 4 repaired models, flying
a very attacking style and making lots of cuts. I knew
that he is a good pilot but with the lack of practice he
has, he showed a remarkable performance. What will happen
when he finds the time to practice and fly good models?
Congratulations
to Chorny who won the competition.
